How Many Grafts Do I Need for a Hair Transplant?
There is no single number that suits everyone. The number of grafts depends on the size of the empty area, the density you want, what the donor area allows, and your hair type. A graft may hold one hair or several, so the number is hard to fix before an assessment. Start by sending photos on WhatsApp.

What is a graft?
A graft, or follicular unit, is a natural group that usually contains one hair to several hairs. So the number of grafts does not equal the number of hairs.
What decides the number?
| Factor | Its effect |
|---|---|
| Size of the empty area | The wider it is, the more is needed |
| Density wanted | The realistic goal differs from one area to another |
| Donor area | It is the real limit of what can be taken safely |
| Hair thickness and type | Thick or curly hair may give the look of more coverage |
| Future hair loss | A good plan allows for what may thin later |
Why should you be wary of a promise of a large number?
Grafts taken from the donor area do not come back to it. Over-extraction can leave the area thin and reduce your options in the future. So a bigger number is not a goal in itself.
What about the beard?
ISHRS states that a beard transplant may need from a few hundred to more than 2000 grafts, depending on the case. Read the beard transplant page.
How do you find your approximate number?
Send clear photos, and the assessment will give you a first idea, which the doctor then confirms by examining the donor area. Also ask about how the grafts are distributed between areas.
