Is Hair Transplant Halal?

Egypt's Dar al-Ifta and Jordan's General Iftaa' Department published two fatwas permitting hair transplant using the person's own hair, with conditions including that benefit outweighs harm. We are a medical clinic, not a fatwa body, so we relay what was published with sources. For wudu, ghusl, prayer, and your own case, ask someone whose knowledge you trust.

What did Egypt's Dar al-Ifta say?

In a fatwa published on March 2, 2017, Dar al-Ifta stated that transplanting hair from the person's own hair is permissible, and that it does not take the ruling of the prohibited hair attachment. It concluded that if the transplant lasts like ordinary hair, it is permissible and is not considered fraud or deception.

What did Jordan's General Iftaa' Department say?

In fatwa no. 3584 (2020), the Department counted hair transplant among the treatments aimed at restoring something to its natural state, on the condition that it causes no harm. It cited the decision of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy on moving an organ from one place to another in the same person's body.

What about wudu and ghusl?

BodyWhat the fatwa stated
Egypt's Dar al-IftaHair transplant does not prevent the validity of wudu and ghusl
Jordan's General Iftaa' DepartmentIf the procedure covered any part of the skin, that would harm ghusl, but planting grafts into the pores without covering the skin has no effect

This is a relay of what the two bodies published, and it is not a fatwa from Nous Hair Clinic. The ruling may differ depending on the details of the procedure, so ask people of knowledge you trust about wudu, ghusl, and prayer after the procedure.

What is worth asking before the procedure?

To get an accurate answer from people of knowledge, find out from the medical team the source of the hair, the planting method, and whether a dressing is placed on the skin and for how long. You will also receive medical instructions on washing the head in the first days, which you can show to the person you ask for a fatwa.
